Among the many architectural wonders that illuminate the cultural landscape of India, Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, stands out as a masterpiece of Rajput creativity, royal vision, and aesthetic finesse. Located in the heart of Jaipur, the iconic pink-washed edifice is not merely a monument but a symbol of Rajasthan’s artistic soul. Its honeycomb-like façade, intricate latticework, and delicately carved windows reflect the glory of the princely state and speak volumes about the ingenuity of artisans of the 18th century. Hawa Mahal is one of the most photographed and admired structures in India, drawing millions of tourists from across the world every year. Yet, beyond its postcard-perfect beauty lies a deeper story—of tradition, craftsmanship, culture, and the socio-political ideologies that shaped its existence. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this architectural marvel was designed by the brilliant craftsman Lal Chand Usta, who infused Mughal finesse with Rajput...

Wiaan Mulder Early Life & Background

Wiaan Mulder, full name Pieter Willem Adriaan Mulder, was born on 19 February 1998 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.

He developed through the age-group levels for Gauteng from Under-13 onwards, showing promise as an all-rounder from early on.

Educated at St Stithians College, Mulder combined his schooling with progressing in domestic cricket.

Playing Style & Role

Mulder is a right-handed batsman and bowls right-arm medium pace, which makes him a genuine all-rounder.

His batting is characterised by solid technique, capable of big scores, while his bowling offers useful variation and support, rather than express pace. As per Cricbuzz:

> “A well-built man … has shown signs of extravagant strokeplay with an orthodox technique along with some medium-pace and the much sought-after variations in modern cricket.”

He fits that dual role which modern teams value: someone who can bat deep and also contribute with the ball.

Domestic & Early Career

Mulder made his first-class debut for the Highveld Lions (in Gauteng) during the 2016-17 Sunfoil Series, still while in school.

On that debut he took seven wickets, including 3 for 10 in the first innings — a statement start.

Subsequently he featured in the domestic T20 and List A formats in South Africa. He has also had stints overseas, e.g., signing for Kent County Cricket Club (England) in 2019.

His domestic record reflects promise, especially in first-class cricket, where he has made significant contributions with bat and ball.

International Career

Mulder’s rise to the international arena was fairly rapid:

He made his One-Day International (ODI) debut for South Africa on 22 October 2017 against Bangladesh.

His Test debut followed on 21 February 2019 against Sri Lanka.

Since then, he has featured in all formats of the game (Test, ODI, T20I) for South Africa, although his primary and strongest performances have come in the Test arena.

Career Highlights & Milestones

In first-class cricket, Mulder has amassed strong numbers: according to his profile, he has scored multiple centuries and taken over 200 wickets in FC matches.

A standout moment came in 2025 when he scored a massive 367 not out in a Test match as captain (for South Africa) at Bulawayo. This innings is one of the highest individual Test scores ever by a South African, and also by a captain.

In his own words he said he did not want to break Brian Lara’s 400-record out of respect — showing maturity and perspective.

These kinds of innings mark him out as not just a promising all-rounder but a potential mainstay for his country.

Strengths, Potential & Challenges

Strengths:

Versatility: Being able to contribute in both departments gives teams flexibility.

Big match temperament: That 367* showed he can bat for long periods, lead, and dominate.

Youth on his side: Born in 1998, he still has many years ahead to refine and peak.

Potential:

He could evolve into one of South Africa’s key all-rounders, especially in Test cricket.

He might assume a leadership role (as evidenced by him captaining in that innings), which adds value.

Challenges:

In shorter formats (ODIs, T20Is), his averages are less spectacular, meaning he still needs to adapt more quickly.

Competition within the South African squad and the evolving demands of modern cricket (especially in T20 leagues) mean he must keep refining his skill-set.

Why He Matters

Mulder represents a next-generation South African cricketer who is not just a specialist either with bat or ball, but truly balanced. For South Africa, who have historically valued all-rounders (think of names like Jacques Kallis, Imran Tahir etc.), having someone capable of delivering with both bat and ball at international level is a big asset.

Moreover, his recent huge innings and leadership show he’s not just potential — he’s already delivering at the highest level. That kind of performance brings belief both within a team and among fans.

What’s Next for Mulder?

Looking ahead:

Consolidation: He’ll want to maintain consistency in all formats, especially filling the gap in limited-overs cricket.

Leadership & role expansion: He may get more responsibility, be it higher batting positions, more bowling overs, or leadership roles.

Staying fit & adaptable: As an all-rounder his workload will be high, so longevity will depend on managing form, fitness and adapting to various formats.

Final Word

Wiaan Mulder is one of those cricketers whose career is at an exciting juncture. He has already delivered the kind of innings most dream of, and now the task is to build on it, remain consistent, and become a cornerstone for South African cricket for years to come. As a fan or follower of cricket, keeping an eye on his performances is certainly worthwhile — because when he’s on song, he has the capacity to change the game in more than one way.
